What is a USMCA form?

The USMCA form is a document required under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, also called CUSMA in Canada, to claim preferential tariff treatment when shipping goods between the three signatory countries.

If you are importing or exporting goods between the United States, Mexico or Canada you may need to complete the form.

Do you need a USMCA form? Yes, if… (all must apply)

  • Your product originates in the United States, Mexico or Canada, and
  • Your product meets the rules of origin as defined in the USMCA agreement, and
  • You are claiming preferential tariff treatment under the USMCA-CUSMA framework, and

Click here to visit the relevant government website for additional guidance on the USMCA and how to complete the form. You can download a blank copy of the form here to complete and provide with your shipment.

If you are shipping the same type of goods frequently, you can add a blanket period to the form. We can then assist you in filing this with the courier so it can be kept on file. This will help avoid delays and also avoid having to submit a new form every time you ship!

Important Tips for Completing the USMCA

  • Make sure your USMCA has the same HS codes you’re using on your Commercial Invoice (HS codes are required on the commercial invoice for preferential tariff treatment).
  • Ensure the sender on your labels match the exporter on your USMCA. If your label says “Company A” then the USMCA must also have “Company A” as the exporter and vice versa.
  • Make sure all fields are completed and a signature is included at the bottom. Missing fields can result in the USMCA not being applied.
  • Goods not made in the United States, Mexico or Canada cannot be listed on the USMCA and can result in fees, fines or a return to sender if listed on it.
  • If there is a USMCA on file, we recommend continuing to upload it to each shipment to ensure it is not missed. Make sure when uploading you specify “Certificate of Origin” as the document type.
