What is an NMFC code for freight / LTL shipments?
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association created the NMFC classification system to help shippers establish accurate pricing
The NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) code is a standard classification system used by transport companies to determine how easy (or difficult) a commodity is to handle and how much it will cost to ship.
Every commodity shipped has both a freight class and an NMFC code. NMFC codes are sub-classes within the 18 freight classes which more specifically define the item being shipped. It is a four to six digit number unique to the commodity.
